Notebook: Frank Fisse, Photographer, 1927-2007

Longtime Indianapolis Star photographer Frank Fisse passed away Thursday May 3, 2007 at the age of 80. Fisse gained renown for his 1964 photo of Parnelli Jones diving out of his burning car in the pits during the Indianapolis 500. Thumbnail photo at left by Bill McCleery, Indianapolis Star.
Included below are small versions of two photos: the famous photo courtesy of the Indianapolis Star and a photo of Fisse standing alone in pit lane taking the photo as Parnelli’s car rolled toward him courtesy of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (larger versions are available at the links below).

There are two good articles about Fisse located here:
IndyStar.com: On race day 1964, it was the shot seen ’round the world (also includes links to a small gallery of Fisse photos and a page of very nice comments from readers, friends, and family)
Indy500.com: Photographer Put Magic Indy Moments into Clear Focus
I never had the pleasure to know Frank Fisse, but it’s people like him and their work that inspire me to keep trying to make the best photographs I can. Rest in peace, Mr. Fisse.

Frank had an incredible imagination and “eye” for composition. This is not something that everyone can learn. I had the pleasure of working with Frank almost 39 years ago when I was a summer intern. He was a tremendous human being. Frank had been a police reporter who picked up an begin using a 4 x 5 Speed Graphic. Those huge 10-pound cameras would have not been a problem for someone of Frank’s size.

I met Frank back in 1986 when I was at DINFOS. He was an awesome guy! Friendly and fiercely passionate about his work. I think of him often.
