Notebook: Benny Parsons

I was very sad to hear that Benny Parsons died Tuesday at the age of 65 following complications from lung disease. I never really “knew” Benny as a racecar driver. My experience of his driving skills go only as far as episodes of “Back in the Day” on Speed Channel will allow. But I knew Benny as a broadcaster, and at that he was very successful.

Of course, I didn’t really know Benny personally. But he was the big, friendly “good ol’ boy” (in the best sense of that term) that came into my living room every Sunday and introduced me to NASCAR and stock car racing. I know that today sometimes it seems as though NASCAR is trying to run away from its southern roots as fast as it can, but I loved that aspect of NASCAR when I first started watching consistently in the mid ’90s (which I know is not that long ago compared to some folks). I think Benny represented that part of NASCAR’s history well, and I sometimes wonder what will happen as more of the “old timers” pass away.

You don’t have to go too far or read too long to hear a story about Benny’s warmth, humor, and compassion. It seems like anyone who ever met him has a really nice story to tell about the experience. And though I never got to see any of his “Buffet Benny” segments on TV, just the idea makes me chuckle because it fits so perfectly.

Rest in peace, Benny. We’re really going to miss you.
