Notebook: Happy Anniversary to the Hulman-George Family, and Thanks!

In case you haven’t already heard, today marks the 60th anniversary of the day that Tony Hulman purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from Eddie Rickenbacker in 1945. If you’ve ever seen photos or videos of the track taken from that year, I think you’ll agree that it’s truly amazing what the Hulman-George family has done and how the track has prospered under their stewardship.

Rather than recount the entire story here, I suggest that you go to the official IMS web site and read through the material written by Donald Davidson, Dick Mittman and others. There are audio comments and photos also available.

Next to Disney World, the Speedway is one of my favorite places on Earth. I congratulate the Hulman-George family on 60 years of success and thank them for making the Indianapolis Motor Speedway such a special place for race fans.
