Talk about drama! As those who were there in person can attest, the battle for pole position in the 91st running of the Indianapolis 500 went right down to the wire, with Helio Castroneves ultimately coming out on top with a four-lap average speed just .06 seconds quicker than that of last-minute challenger Tony Kanaan. This recording captures the exciting final ten minutes of qualifying as called by Dave Calabro and cheered on by thousands of fans. read more »

iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations is a company I’ve been keeping an eye on for the last year or so. Founded by David Kaemmer, co-founder of Papyrus Racing Games (NASCAR 2003, IndyCar Racing, Grand Prix Legends), and John Henry, principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, their mission is to create the world’s most authentic, most sophisticated, most accurate PC-based racing simulations and grow a new branch of motorsport through real-time, online competition — otherwise known as simracing. They recently announced that they have begun recording and digitizing a wide variety of racing sounds for inclusion in their simulations, which I find to be pretty cool given my interest in creating my own sound recordings for IndianaRacing.net. A collection of 20 audio clips from the 90th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, the Indianapolis 500. With one of the most dramatic Indy 500 finishes of all time, this edition of the race would be dubbed an “instant classic” and will surely be remembered and recounted by race fans for decades to come. This collection comprises many of the pre-race ceremonies and initial laps of the race which were recorded from the viewing mounds inside turn one, and the final laps of the race which were recorded next to Victory Lane. read more »
