Spotlight: Hayden Turns First Laps at IMS

2006 MotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden turned the first laps by a motorcycle on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s recently reconfigured road course, riding a restored 1909 Indian motorcycle that competed in the Speedway’s first race on August 14, 1909. After the historic first lap on the Indian, Hayden made several laps on a Honda production bike before speaking to the media. The event was staged in preparation for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP, to be held September 14, 2008.   read more »

Notebook: AMA Flat Track Championship Returns to the Indiana State Fairgrounds in 2008

Fantastic news… the 2008 AMA Flat Track Championship schedule has been announced and it includes an event to be held September 13th at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds. That will be the same weekend as the Red Bull Indianapolis GP being run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 14th. It’s shaping up to be a great weekend for motorcycle racing fans of all kinds. I’ve been fascinated by flat track racing since seeing the classic movie “On Any Sunday” by Bruce Brown but just haven’t gotten around to getting my butt and my camera to a race. I will really be looking forward to this event. See you there!

The MotoGP motorcycles that will race on the course weigh something over 300 pounds with a max speed of about 208mph, while the Caterpillar CB-534D XW Asphalt Compactor in the photo weighs almost 25,000 pounds and can travel at a max speed of just 8mph!   read more »

It’s hard to believe that its been two months since I’ve been out to the Speedway to check out all of the construction on the new road course sections being built for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP coming on September 14, 2008. We’ve had some glorious Fall weather in Indy recently, so on October 30th I hopped on the “Track Tour Bus” to get some updated photos. Then on November 1st I had a unique opportunity to get an up close and personal view of the paving process in turn 9.   read more »

Gallery: MotoGP Road Course Construction Update 3

Here are several new photos of the construction project taking place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 2008 Red Bull Indianapolis GP MotoGP race to be held September 14, 2008. Once again, these photos were taken from inside a moving track tour bus. With a few more laps in that thing I think I will qualify for a free upgrade to first class.   read more »
