Spotlight: And Heeeeeeee’s On It!

Two-wheeled vehicles are on their way to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September 2008 but they’ll look a little different than this one. This is a photo of a Grady Brothers Inc. employee compacting the new asphalt being laid in turns 7-9 of the Speedway’s recently modified road course. The MotoGP motorcycles that will race on the course weigh something over 300 pounds with a max speed of about 208mph, while the Caterpillar CB-534D XW Asphalt Compactor in the photo weighs almost 25,000 pounds and can travel at a max speed of just 8mph!   read more »

It’s hard to believe that its been two months since I’ve been out to the Speedway to check out all of the construction on the new road course sections being built for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP coming on September 14, 2008. We’ve had some glorious Fall weather in Indy recently, so on October 30th I hopped on the “Track Tour Bus” to get some updated photos. Then on November 1st I had a unique opportunity to get an up close and personal view of the paving process in turn 9.   read more »

Here are several new photos of the construction project taking place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the 2008 Red Bull Indianapolis GP MotoGP race to be held September 14, 2008. Once again, these photos were taken from inside a moving track tour bus. With a few more laps in that thing I think I will qualify for a free upgrade to first class.   read more »

I had the pleasure of taking my family to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum last Saturday, August 11. As we rode the tour bus around the track at speeds just slightly under Helio Castroneves’ 2007 Indy 500 pole-winning speed of 225.817 mph, I managed to snap a few photos of the road course construction project currently underway.   read more »

Gallery: MotoGP Road Course Construction Begins at IMS

Construction on the new, 2.601-mile road course to be used for the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP motorcycle race has started at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. IMS President and COO Joie Chitwood and Kevin Forbes, Director of Engineering and Construction addressed the media on August 1, 2007, two days into the project.   read more »
