Music: “Indy 5″ by Mark Cohen and the Spirits

Folk singer Mark Cohen recorded “Indy 5″ on the album “Moments of Grace”, released in 2004 by Street Scenes Music.
You can listen to the song for free at Rhapsody.com. You have to install their proprietary player which is a little annoying, but it downloads and installs pretty quickly and allows you to listen to up to 25 songs for free each month. I took a few minutes to read through the biographical information on Mark’s site, and also the notes about the album. But for the life of me I can’t find the connection between a New York-based folk singer and the Indy 500.
I’d give this song an A for effort, especially since it was released in 2004. Nobody seems to write songs like this anymore, so it’s nice to hear a song that pays homage to something so near and dear to many of our hearts. To be perfectly honest, the sound comes across as a little “sappy” to me. But what do I know… I’m certainly not a professional music critic. The words definitely sound like they were written by someone who has witnessed the spectacle of the Indy 500 though, and it’s fun just to hear it all described in a song.
If you like independent folk music, be sure to give the rest of Mark’s album a listen, and maybe even a “shout out” to let him know you appreciate “Indy 5″.
