North Vista Location

North Vista is located on the outer north side of the track along the short chute between turns three and four. A small portion actually extends toward the apex of turn three. North Vista is bordered on the east by Northeast Vista, and on the west by Northwest Vista.

According to a 2004 count conducted by Indianapolis Star reporter Curt Cavin, North Vista has 31,240 seats.

North Vista sections start at section 68 on the east side next to Northeast Vista and run through section 21 on the west side next to Northwest Vista. Tunnel 10 runs below sections 40-42.

The first row is row A for all North Vista sections. Top rows vary as follows:

  • Sections 21-56, top row is QQ.
  • Sections 57-58, top row is FF.
  • Section 59, exact top row is unknown (between M and FF).
  • Sections 60-68, top row is M.

(Section 48 Row B) This section is in the middle of the North Vista, just east of the tunnel. There is a big screen Video monitor just opposite the seats. You can see the cars coming out of turn 3 through the short chute and around turn 4. Concession stands and bathrooms are a short distance away. Easy access from the North (30th Street). I usually park in the developement just north of 30th Street. Easy access in and easy access out. Row B is the first row in the stands. Most people think it is too low. However if you are bringing kids or are short they are great. No one blocks your view. The safety guards chase people away that stand in front of the seats.

We traded for seats in the North Vista one year, and ended up in the wheelchair row (Row A), which was actually on the front of the walkway, in front of and below the first row of actual seats. I would challenge anyone to find a seat that is closer to the actual racing surface - WOW. I wouldn’t want to sit there every year, but it was amazing to be that close, literally only 5-6 feet from the concrete wall, in the middle of the turn.

i’ve got tickets in the north vista row 22 section BB seats 1&2…does anyone know how good these seats are?

#4  -  Paul Woods    (July 24th, 2010 at 12:39 pm)

Tiffany- I’d say those are good seats. Are there better seats? Yes. Are there worse seats? Absolutely. You’ll be at the entrance to turn four, so you should be able to see all of turn three, turn four, and down the front stretch. Not bad at all! Don’t worry about the seats… just have fun at the race!

Just moved my seats to the North Vista, Section 25, rows HH and JJ. Will send my pics after the race this year. Previously, we sat in section 41, directly across from the video board and above the tunnel. We decided to move more into turn four, so that we can see the cars leaving turn 4 and heading into the straight. The tradeoff here, is that we won’t be able to see the video monitor as well. But if you’re going to watch the video monitors all day, you might as well watch from your couch! Can’t wait ’till May!

#6  -  Thurat    (May 28th, 2011 at 1:41 am)

Hey, I was wondering if these are good seats for me and my 10 y/o. North Vista Sec 36 Row G? For both of us it is our first time to the IMS. Are there any suggestions on things we should/shouldn’t do to make this a memorable, safe, and fun experience? Thanks, Thurat

#7  -  Paul Woods    (May 28th, 2011 at 10:17 am)

Thurat- Some would say that those seats are a bit low, but I think they will be okay especially for first-timers. You should have a great view of turn 4 and a pretty good view of turn 3, but you probably will not be able to see the cars when they are up close to the wall between 3 and 4… not really that big a deal.

As far as advice… be prepared for a very long hot day. Bring sunscreen and/or hats, sunglasses, etc. Bring hearing protection of some kind. Bring a cooler of drinks or be willing to go buy drinks during the race. Most importantly, bring patience and a good attitude… that makes all the difference in the world! You will have a great time and a lot of fun, even if it’s a bit overwhelming… there’s nothing else like it!

#8  -  Bigeza2000    (July 26th, 2011 at 4:18 pm)

This will be my first time at IMS. We have seats in North vista sec 31 row GG. How are these seats? I’ve heard you can’t see the whole track? Slightly disappointing but what should we expect?

#9  -  Paul Woods    (July 27th, 2011 at 9:11 am)

Bigeza2000- I think you’ll be happy with those seats. IMS is a very big place, and there are no seats that allow you to see the entire track. You should be able to see the cars beginning with the end of the backstretch, in turn 3, all the way through 4 and partway down the front stretch. That’s not bad at all. There should be two jumbo TVs you can see to follow the other action. Have fun!

#10  -  Tiffany    (July 27th, 2011 at 2:15 pm)

I have seats in North Vista S 34 row NN seats 7 and 8, Do you think this will be good seating?

#11  -  Paul Woods    (July 28th, 2011 at 8:24 am)

Tiffany- Yes, those will be good seats. The key to getting good seats in the North Vista is to be up high. Generally speaking, double-letter rows are best… NN is the fourth row from the very top. Enjoy the race!

#12  -  First-Timer    (July 28th, 2011 at 3:14 pm)

Got tickets today! North Vista Section 31, Row W, are these good seats? Can’t wait, I’ve always wanted to go. This is the first time I’ve ever even been to the track. My Dad was a friend of old A.J.’s in years past. I’m finally getting to go Dad RIP.

#13  -  tede    (March 3rd, 2012 at 8:57 am)

I got tickets sec 45 row kk seats 1-6 whats the view like and are these good seats

#14  -  Paul Woods    (March 4th, 2012 at 6:25 pm)

tede- I think those are pretty good seats, in fact I have been in 45 JJ for the last few years. You’ll have great views of turns 3 & 4, some of the backstretch and some of the frontstretch. The cars will disappear very briefly when they are directly in front up close to the wall, but so what? Most of the time they come out on the other side just fine. :) There is a video board almost directly in front, and many times the North Vista doesn’t get filled up so you can spread out a little if you want to. There is absolutely no shade or other protection from the weather, so come prepared. Bottom line… there are “better” seats, but these aren’t bad at all. See you there!

#15  -  tede    (March 5th, 2012 at 9:41 pm)

Paul hey pal thank u for getting back what seat # do u have? I think that is a good view sat in sec 41 ff couple of times you see alot of track. do you have any pictures from your seats you can post. I also got camping passes in lot A a short walk to our seats and most importantly a short walk after its along day in them stands wouldnt miss it for nothing though

#16  -  Paul Woods    (March 17th, 2012 at 10:57 am)

tede- Sounds like I’ll be right in front of you… I’m in 45/JJ 3&4. Sometimes we move a row or two away for “breathing room” if there are empty seats (and there usually are). I can’t get to my pics from there right now but I will see if I can post some soon. See you there!

#17  -  TEDE    (April 11th, 2012 at 9:35 am)

Oh boy got tickets and camping passes lot 1A wont b long now we r stoked

#18  -  Tbstanford34    (April 27th, 2012 at 10:23 pm)

Hello all, we love the north vista. He people are great and friendly. We sit in section 45, jumbo tron rocks. Not to rowdy, and not to lame. Great for teens and adults. We do a father son trip every year all guys from 14 to 71 this year. It’s great everything’s close and you can see the drunk college kids on the party deck in the infield, and in general admission. It’s a show within a show. Haha. See you all there, less then a month away. Todd have a blessed day!

#19  -  Tbstanford34    (April 28th, 2012 at 9:09 pm)

Just picked up 2 more tickets. If anyone has extra tickets. Let me know. We still need 6-8 I believe. If no one backs out. Which usually happens. It’s always the first timers that back out. Once you go, you can’t wait to get back. God bless and have a great day. Todd

#20  -  mikey    (May 7th, 2012 at 12:46 am)

can anyone tell me where the seats are as in Section: S30 , Row: JJ , Seat(s): 17-18. and if they are good or bad, i got them as a free gift and was just needing to know if i should go or not. Please post back soon, thanks!

#21  -  Paul Woods    (May 7th, 2012 at 9:09 am)

mikey- Yes, absolutely you should take advantage of those free tickets and go to the race. Those are good seats… if you look at the overhead photo you’ll see a blue 30 which indicates section 30. You’ll be right at the entrance of turn 4 and row JJ is good and high so you’ll have a good view… you’ll probably be able to see a good portion of the front stretch as well. Have fun!

#22  -  Vince    (May 9th, 2012 at 5:30 pm)

OK, this is kind of weird, but I just took my tickets out of the envelope from the IMS that came today and it looks like I received tickets that are the exact same as what Mikey above says he was given. My tickets are North Vista, Section 30, Row JJ, seats 17 & 18. Anybody got any idea how this could be?

#23  -  Tbstanford34    (May 9th, 2012 at 10:24 pm)

Yes very weird, no idea Vince but I can tell ya the North vista rocks. See ya all there. Hey Paul I’ll buy ya a beer there. Vince there will be plenty of open seats down by us in section 44 and 45 just come sit with us down low. We have the jumbo tron anyways.

#24  -  Paul Woods    (May 10th, 2012 at 9:06 am)

Vince- I think it’s the Speedway’s new overbooking strategy… before the race they’ll ask for volunteers to watch a later race and the compensation will go up the closer it gets to the green flag. Gotta fill the seats somehow. :)

Obviously I’m kidding… if you are sure that your tickets say NV Sec 30, Row JJ, seats 17 & 18, then I suspect Mikey is mistaken about where his tickets are. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

#25  -  Paul Woods    (May 10th, 2012 at 9:09 am)

Tbstanford34- Yes, I’ll see you there… I’ll be the dork with the recording gear, scanner, yellow headset and wires all over the place. Won’t be long now!

#26  -  TEDE    (May 16th, 2012 at 11:00 am)

We are headed down from the region. We just picked up 4 more tix. Sec 43 QQ 5-8. But we most likely will not be sitting there. Still looking to go 44-46 lower. Need room for 13 men, from ages 13-71. Stop by for a beer we park in the FREE LOT. Just south of 30. We park backing up to 30th, between Fuller and Auburn. East of the entrance, right next to where the state troopers park their cars. Bags, washers, food, and drinks. We will be there from 6am to race start and then again after.have a great, and blessed day. See you all there. Same seats, same parking stop every year. YES I LOVE INDY!!!!!

#28  -  S Adams    (May 19th, 2012 at 11:35 am)

#30  -  Paul Woods    (May 21st, 2012 at 1:41 pm)

Sally- You’ll have a pretty good view of turn 3 and a great view of turn 4. The cars will disappear for a little bit when they hug the wall between 3 and 4, but that’s no big deal. You’ll be able to see a video screen to your left and probably a little of the one to your right. Have fun at the race!

#31  -  AK    (May 23rd, 2012 at 10:42 am)

We have a chance to get seats in section 51 row jj
these any good?

#33  -  Paul Woods    (May 23rd, 2012 at 3:23 pm)

tizzymom- Those are good seats… you’ll be able to see part of the backstretch, a great view of turn 3, the cars might disappear briefly in the short chute, but then you’ll see them go through turn 4 and onto the frontstretch. JJ is a good high row. Enjoy the race!

#34  -  tede    (May 23rd, 2012 at 10:49 pm)

#35  -  Sally    (May 24th, 2012 at 11:23 am)

Paul - What is the best way to get to section 31, rowAA seats 1-6, I know there will be hundreds of peoples/cars……so looking for the easiest access point in and out. Any suggestions?

#36  -  Paul Woods    (May 24th, 2012 at 2:20 pm)

Sally- I go in through Gate 9 on the northwest corner near 25th & Georgetown Rd to get to my seats in North Vista because I park near there (Lot 1B). But obviously any gate location will get you there if you’re willing to walk a little (or a lot!). As for getting out, it depends on where you need to go… all lanes on Georgetown Rd south of 30th St are directed south toward 16th & Crawfordsville Rd and it can take a long time for the pedestrians to clear out and the traffic to start moving. Unless you’re willing to park away from the track a little and do some walking, the best plan is to just hang out for a while until some of the traffic clears.

#37  -  Tbstanford34    (May 24th, 2012 at 2:22 pm)

Are you coming from the north? If so and you don’t mind walking. Park north west of the track. Just south of 30th. Free parking and it’s easy to get out if you want to leave early. If you stay for the whole race. Which we do. Plan on stopping and resting by your vehicle and having a pop and a sandwich. It’s fun to watch all the goofs rush out and sit in traffic. So be smart and take your time. If you do park there enter the track in turn 4 walk east to your section. Have a blast. See ya there. We park backed up to 30th, by auburn.

#38  -  Tbstanford34    (May 29th, 2012 at 8:30 pm)

Great time was had by all. Can’t wait till next year. See you all in 363 days. Hot indeed. Fun indeed. Memories indeed. God bless, and thank God for a safe Race. Todd
