J Stand

This is my favorite stand because of the view and the price is lower than the vistas. You see coming out of 3, the short chute all of 4 and all the main straight. The higher the sect # the better view of the main straight is. I started out in sect 6 and am now in sect 28.

(Section 24 Row G) I love these seats. People bash ‘em for being low, but I don’t care. I climb up higher during quallies and don’t really see wht higher is better in this stand. There is a TV screen right in front, I can see the cars coming out of turn 13, all the way down the front stretch, and all of turns, 1, 2, 3 some of turn 4 & 5, and most of 6 before they go to the back stretch.

Level of car noise is perfect, you get the contrasting noises of the cars breaking HARD for turn 1 in your right ear, while the left ear picks up the cars already thru turns 1 & 2 and accelerating for a short time before turn 3 & 4.

Restroom and concession access is good, this stand is not covered, and the fans around me seem very knowledgeable and well behaved.

I’ve sat almost everywhere in this place at one time or another, and I really believe that these seats are among the best in the house for the USGP.

try to get so you can see most of the short chute, then all of turn four (INDY)……….

as historians know lots of action takes place coming out of four as the drivers position themselves for a pass on the main straight…….

there was a TV screen right across the track from me, that was very good.

for crash seekers, well stuff does tend to happen there.

personally, i didn’t like watching cars going away down the front stretch as much as watching them come towards me when in turn one or three…..

close to the coke lot and good parties……..

Sat in J for years including 1996 when we had the Guerrero/Zampedri/Salazar incident right in front of us.

Great view of the North end of the track and you can see all the way down the main straight. Only problem is you’re looking at gearboxes all the way down. You’d have to “memorize” who was where if you wanted to know what was happening by the time they get to turn one.

This is the best kept secret in Indy. I absolutely love it when they start accelerating in the short shoot going through the corner into the main stretch when they are ready to go green. You have a good view of 3, 4 and start/finish. Some don’t like seeing the backs of cars going down to start finish. I actually prefer seeing up close and personal how they got there. Only quirk though - try to get high. You can see more of three when you do.

Sat in J Stand for the 2008 race. Section 18, Row L.

I thought the seats were a very good deal for the price. A video board right across the track from Sec. 18 made it very easy for me and my 7 year old son to follow the action during the race.

The view of the short chute, and turn 4 is excellent, but in sections 1-18 it is difficult to see down the finishing straight. J-stand is at an odd angle to the track. From the kink in Section 20, and up, you are right up against the turn 4 fence, and have a terrific view of the main straight. From section 16 on down the stands angle away from the fence until there is a gap of about 30-40 feet from the stand to the fence. Can’t imagine you’d see a whole lot in the lower section #’s.

My only reluctance at sitting in the J-stand is the preponderance of drunks. Now, drunks and car racing go hand in hand, and I’m no Pollyanna, but some people were just a little too blasted for my tastes. It was a good cultural learning experience for my boy. Heck, it reminded me of growing up in the 70’s and attending Buffalo Bills games. (I have fond childhood memories of seeing a drunk passed out in the urinal trough at Rich Stadium, and the nice fans giving him a warm shower.) I have forgotten how little public drunkeness is left at major sporting events these days. Anyway, I’m 40 now and prefer my life a little more sedate than that. From what I have read here, I’ll probably pay a bit more and look to move into a more upscale stand area and leave the drunks to their fun.

Hi Mr. Woods. Back on Dec 15, ‘09, you gave me some advice on J-stand vs PPenthouse tix for the MotoGP races. Well, I bought both and we chose the J-stand: S27:T:1-2. Hopefully we can give the spares to some other giddy pair. Me and Dad are very excited. Thank you much for your help. I’m still nervous about the seats, however you said that there really no bad seats so to speak, just different based on what your goal is. We’re riding out from New England next week and I need your opinion again. Any suggestions for less congested places to stay & what to bring for the days races? Is there a link that I missed on your site for a “What to bring on raceday”? Thank you for this site– it’s been a great resource!

Lara- Unfortunately, I don’t have any suggestions for places to stay. Being local, I’ve never stayed at a hotel for a race!

Regarding what to bring… just keep in mind that you will be outdoors all day. Dress comfortably and bring lightweight raingear if you’ve got some (if there is *any* chance of rain) and sun protection. Some people like to bring in loads of food and drinks, but personally I find that to be a pain and I just bring a bottle of water and some snacks and fork over the cash for food at one of the many vendors at the track. If you are riding to the MotoGP and will be parking inside the track, you might have access to your bike during the event which could make things a little easier… most people have to park outside the track and must bring everything in with them when they enter the gate.

I sat here for the 2010 Indianapolis 500. Many crashes happen in this general area, and those are the exciting part. The only con is that it is in the open, and there is no back support. But for seats on a budget, these are very good.
