General Admission Locations

General Admission… an Indianapolis Motor Speedway tradition since 1909!

General Admission tickets are available for the Indianapolis 500 and the US Grand Prix. They provide admission to the grounds and the following viewing areas.

For the Indy 500, viewing mounds are available on the inside of the track in five distinct areas:

  • On the front straight just south of turn four and north of Tower Terrace.
  • In turn one just south of the Pit Road Suites and adjacent to First Turn Terrace.
  • In turn two, also known as the “Family Viewing Mounds”.
  • The entire backstretch.
  • All the way through turn three. This area is developing a reputation as a party zone, which can be good or bad depending on your perspective.

For the US Grand Prix, the following viewing mounds and stands are available to general admission ticket holders:

  • On the outside and exit of turn seven.
  • On the outside of the course with views of turns eight, nine, and ten.
  • On the inside of the course on the short straight between turns eleven and twelve.
  • On the inside of turn thirteen.
  • Tower Terrace (sections 39-77 only).
  • South Terrace.
  • First Turn Terrace (USGP turn thirteen).

Generally speaking, fans are allowed to bring blankets, lawn chairs, coolers, etc. to make themselves comfortable on the viewing mounds. For specific policy questions, it’s best to contact the Speedway directly.

In a 2004 story Indianapolis Star reporter Curt Cavin estimated that approximately 6,000 people watch the Indy 500 from the viewing mounds.

Are there seats for gerneral admission ticket holders? Thank you

Donna- For the Indy 500 and Allstate 400, there are no seats available. Many people sit on blankets, etc. on the grass, and some bring lawn chairs. For the MotoGP race, there will be seats available for general admission ticket holders. Also, General Admission tickets are not available for the Allstate 400 unless you purchase the “Season Pass” which includes general admission to all three races held at the Speedway.

Where would a person find a general admission seat for the GP?
Thanks.

For the MotoGP race, General Admission ticket holders can sit in C Stand, Paddock, and A Stand along the front stretch, as well as G Stand and Southeast Vista on the southeast corner of the track, and North Vista and Northwest Vista on the north side of the track. They can also find a spot on the grass almost anywhere in the infield. Tower Terrace along the front stretch is listed as “as needed” but I wouldn’t recommend sitting there anyway.

thank you so much for these pictures I think I am going buy general admission tickets because of these photo’s. I just like how open and unobtrusive it is. This will be my first one, driving from Maryland….

skykid2- General Admission can indeed provide a more flexible, relaxed experience. You can feel free to wander and even take a short nap under a tree mid-race if you want to. Keep in mind that since this page was created, the GA area in turn 1 has been removed, and turn 3 has become even more of a party zone. Have fun!

Just wanted to check, the north front stretch mounds are still available for General Admission, right?

#8  -  Paul Woods    (May 6th, 2012 at 9:32 pm)

auribe14- Yes, as far as I know there is still a short section of grass mounds there for GA ticket holders.

We got free tickets for the stands but we want to sit in the grass is this possible?

#10  -  Paul Woods    (May 10th, 2013 at 7:57 am)

Anon- Yes, the grassy areas are open to everyone, you can sit anywhere that you can find a spot. I would suggest at least going to your seats to check out the view and then making a decision… you will definitely see more from your seats.

I purchased a $25 General Admission ticket for Turn 3. We were going to take my truck and tailgate there. Does every person riding in the vehicle need to buy a ticket as well? Or will my ticket for Turn 3 get everyone in my truck in on Race Day?

#12  -  Paul Woods    (May 17th, 2013 at 9:09 am)

Anonymous- Everyone will need a ticket for the race. If you paid $25, then I believe what you purchased was just a parking pass for turn 3. General Admission tickets are $30 each. But if you have more questions, contact the Speedway directly… I am just some guy on the internet. :)

I know this to be true. General Admission gives you access to the grounds. It does NOT entitle you to a preferred seat..HOWEVER, if there is an open seat and no ticket holder you MAY sit in the seat so long as a preferred ticket holder has a ticket for that PARTICULAR seat.I have friends from ILL that come every year and wander and sit in many different stands..One year they sat with us in the A stand nobody said squat.
