I sat in the lower level of A Stand for the 2003 US Grand Prix. I don’t remember the section, but it was closer to B Stand than it was the Paddock.
As anyone who attended that race will tell you, it rained… a lot. It was cold too, since the race was in September. So the nicest thing about A Stand was that it provided cover from the rain, and in warmer weather it would provide shade as well, which could be very important to some people.
For the USGP you’ll be able to see a little of the pre-race festivities, but they will not be directly in front of you, they’ll be to the north in front of the Paddock. You will be able to see pit stops but on the lower levels you’ll be looking through the fence. You’ll have good views of USGP turn 13 and you’ll be seeing the cars at maximum speed if that’s something you like.
A couple of notes… if you are in the upper rows of the lower level, you will not be able to see anything above you. For example, you will only be able to see the lower portion of the Pagoda and scoring tower. Also, beware that having a roof over you can dramatically increase the noise of the cars going by. I go to a lot of races and don’t always wear hearing protection, but the sound of the Formula One cars with their high RPMs made it feel like someone was driving nails into my ears. The penthouse sections don’t seem nearly as bad.
So overall, these are decent seats but if you can brave the weather there are better ones available.

We have seats in lower box level of Stand A in row T which is the last row with an aisle behind you. Its convenient to hop out to use the restroom or grab food. These seats are stadium bleacher seats with backs. They are out of any harsh weather (direct sun/rain). The 2007 Indy 500 experienced rain showers and we stayed dry. Even the next 10 rows in front of us were dry. Fans do tend to stand long periods of time in this location. Track viewing is best into turn 1 or on the large monitors. We were right across from Hornish Jr.’s pit with great views of Patrick’s to Castroneves’s. You also get the thump in your chest feeling when the cars at race speed. I highly recommend these seats or location, especially for the price ($85).
We also have seats in Stand A Penthouse. These seats are almost twice as expensive ($150/per) but they also come with better views. If sitting is your thing this is a great locale. Views of the track include the majority of the straightaway and most of the shortchute. Depending how high you are, you can also see some of the backstretch. They did keep us dry and out of the sun. Pit viewing is awesome as well. There are bathrooms and food vendors located upstairs so you don’t have to huff down to ground level. These are steep stadium bleacher seats with backs. The noise here is surprisingly much louder. I believe its in relation to being closer to the canopy above.

I took the recomendation for STAND A Row T (Section 21) and was perfect for the USGP 2007. I could see almost all pit stops and part of the grid set up. I would prefered to be in Section 27 - 29 next time to be closer to the first cars in the grid and just in front of the screen but it was great this time any way. I had the two Toro Rosso in front of me when they were in the grid. Good advise, Thank you

We have been here for Indy500 tickets in various sections and rows all within A stand and they are great seats. Great for seeing the starting festivities, pit action, and passing on the straight into the start of turn1. This section
is right in front of the best teams’ pits for 500.
Most of it is covered from sun/rain (starting at about row M up through all double letters), except the first dozen rows down lower which are a bit too close to the track to see the IRL cars which race outside mostly in my opinion.
People tend to stand to see cars coming down the stretch. Most are pretty good race fans and not too drunk/crazy, and are into the pits action. Smaller video boards are visible from most of the section.
Unless you are in a Penthouse seat or E stand ($$$) or prefer to be high up in the open air/sun, these are some of the better seats on the track in my opinion, especially if you like watching pit action.

I have a group of 12 family members going. No one section seems ideal and that is alot of tix to get together. I am wondering about the feasibility of getting diff sections and possibly switching during the race so people get a mix. How far is Paddock Penthouse from A stand row v for example?
Thanks

Eric- If you want to sit on the main straight, you’re probably right about needing to split up. You might be able to get 12 together in the lowest rows of the Paddock, but those aren’t great seats.
The distance from A stand to Paddock Penthouse is not far, but it all depends on which sections of those two stands you’re in. If the seats are on the south side of A Stand and the north side of Paddock Penthouse, that’s a long way. But the biggest problem you’ll run into is that you’ll need a ticket for each stand to even be able to enter that stand. So for example, if you were sitting in A Stand and wanted to switch to Paddock Penthouse, you wouldn’t be allowed to go there without a Paddock Penthouse ticket. My advice would be to forget about switching seats unless they are all in the same stand. But even then, it’s not like you’ll be able to talk to everyone during the race… it’s way too loud. Do all your socializing before and after the actual race.
If you really want all 12 together, I can almost guarantee there would be some available in the North Vista… if the seats are high enough you can see quite a bit from there.

where is SEC 55 Row L? Brickyard/2011
#9 - Paul Woods (July 22nd, 2011 at 8:55 am)
Suzie- My notes say that there is no section 55 in A Stand. You might want to double-check your tickets… if they really say A Stand, Sec 55 you should give the Speedway ticket office a call to verify that the seats exist and that the tickets are legit.
