The Hoosier Race Report: Texas Invasion

By Danny Burton

No matter how hard one may try and keep up with all the short track hot shoes, there will always be some who’ll slip through the cracks. Granted, I pay more attention to up and coming open wheel racers, but I can say that I’m quite aware of a few of our fendered brethren too. And after Sunday’s 36th Winchester 400 at the venerable Winchester Speedway’s high banks, now I’m quite aware of a young man named Ryan Lawler. Perhaps you should be as well; maybe this young man may move on to other racing series.   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: As the Sun Sets

By Danny Burton

As the sun sets on another Hoosier race season, one realizes one of the few pluses of getting older. I drove to the world famous Lawrenceburg Speedway on a very warm October evening, window rolled down, the little truck humming as always, surrounded by both corn fields (many of which have been picked) and trees on I-74. Turning off onto Indiana Road One that runs up and down Indiana’s east side, I had a nice view of some of the most beautiful hills our state has to offer. Arriving just before the scheduled 7 p.m. start time, I felt as much as home as I could feel. People can get so exercised over words on a screen and can forget that, after all, it’s only the internet and those threats that they may make or read are often merely threats and no more. There are, believe it or not, more important matters and often they are right here among this dysfunctional racing family that includes most who may read this.   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: Winding Down

By Danny Burton

As yet another racing season in the Midwest slowly reaches its end, so do other matters, or even careers. Kevin Briscoe has had a racing career that is one we all could admire, but one should remember that first and foremost, he doesn’t race for a living. Instead he races for the love and joy of it all. He is also a businessman and a family man as well. So as he gets a year older maybe he feels the need to consider what the next move should be.   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: Lines and Angles

By Danny Burton

Whether or not we realize or care, we all have lines in our lives. These lines are seen or unseen. They can be real or imagined. They can be lines we draw ourselves or have our society or culture draw them instead. Sometimes we foolishly cross those lines and pay a serious price. But no matter what these lines are or what they mean, we’d be best advised to be aware of them. For Jon Stanbrough on Friday night at the Gas City/I-69 Speedway, lines were important. Though it may not have been totally visible, Jon’s line was real. It happened to be the one he used to run off with the sprint feature after starting 11th. And in the process he made yet another fan in my grandson. But that’s another story.   read more »
