Notebook: HELIO WINS!!

Outstanding! Amazing! Magnificent! Bravo Helio!

Two-time Indy 500 Champion and IndyCar Series star Helio Castroneves and his partner Julianne Hough were crowned the Champions of ABC’s mega-hit television show “Dancing With the Stars” last night, Tuesday November 27.

Most of us out here in “race fan land” don’t typically spend our Monday and Tuesday nights glued to our televisions to watch ballroom dancing. But roughly 20 million other Americans do, and it was absolutely fabulous to see Helio serve as the ambassador of the IndyCar Series to the masses. There couldn’t possibly have been a better choice.

So congratulations Helio! Thank you for all of your hard work, and for sharing your ebullient personality and joy of life with all of us. It was truly a delight! We all look forward to your return to the Speedway in May.

Chapter One: First Day of Retirement

He stood in line at the pit gate for the first time as a “retired person.” He could not have been more pleased. 28 years he had toiled, sweated, argued, and sometimes pushed himself harder than he should have, but it didn’t matter now. He was retired and had prepared for this day. Life was good. Or so he thought.   read more »

Message boards and real time talk are dominated by cranky fans with an agenda of sorts, along with racing trivia buffs, who delight in showing how little people like me know. So what follows is a good or bad bit of meandering.   read more »

Spotlight: See Ya Later Sam… Good Luck!

So now it’s “officially official”… 2006 Indy 500 Winner and 3-time IndyCar Series Champion Sam Hornish Jr. is off to try his hand at NASCAR. This photo was taken as Sam sped away on the back of a golf cart, shortly after winning the 2006 Indy 500 and finishing with the media. Somehow it seemed apropos for the news. There are a lot of different viewpoints on this whole deal and they’re all just a few clicks away on a countless number of internet message boards. But I guess all I have to say is “Good luck Sam… thanks for the memories, and maybe we’ll see you at the Brickyard in July!”   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: Five for Number Five

By Danny Burton

The 19th edition of Salem’s Halloween 200 ended up like four of the previous 18, with Chuck Barnes Sr. standing at the start/finish line of the historic high banks, tired but happy, and with a somewhat bulkier wallet. Certainly the veteran from Louisville, KY earned it, once again dodging all the obstacles that greet anyone who tackles the grand old track, and most especially when there are 77 other cars on that track at the same time.   read more »
