The Hoosier Race Report: First Times and Good Times

By Danny Burton

Yet another hot and humid Hoosier weekend it was. Like a few hundred of my closest pals I refrained from staying inside, preferring to be at an area short track. I’m glad I did. Not only did I get to see a couple of first time winners, I spent some good times with plenty of like minded friends. We could not care less how each other vote, worship, or work. We only enjoyed the racing and the company, in no particular order. But Brad Sweet at Bloomington, along with Derek Franks at Lawrenceburg, quite possibly enjoyed themselves even more than the fans. Brad garnered his first sprint car win at the Bloomington Speedway while Derek outran Brett Burdette to take his first sprinter victory anywhere at the Lawrenceburg Speedway.   read more »

Making it three wins in a row, Jon Stanbrough came from the 13th starting position at Gas City/I-69 Speedway to remind USAC’s finest that he and the Fox Brothers team are for real. Of course this was as if they needed convincing. On a track that became very dusty fairly early in the 30 lap feature Stanbrough “patiently” made his way to the front, winning by a few car lengths over pole sitter Levi Jones with A.J. Anderson third after a very trying night of ups, downs, and more ups. The feature winner came back after a tip-over in his heat race while Anderson came back after a tumble in his heat race, overcoming great odds and obstacles.   read more »

By Danny Burton

Maybe Saturday night’s race wasn’t the best or the closest race I’ve ever seen, at the Tri-State Speedway or anywhere else, but it was certainly close to the best I’ve ever seen. Jon Stanbrough bided his time as he worked his way forward to take round three of Indiana Sprint Week at the Helfrich family’s crown jewel of a race track.   read more »

Brady Short is a fine young man who began driving modifieds at the Bloomington Speedway a few years back, graduating to sprint cars just last year. His improvement has been steady and his dedication unending. And on Friday night, July 14, at Bloomington, all of that paid off as he won his first USAC sprint feature, round two of Indiana Sprint Week.   read more »
