Notebook: Wheldon, Rice, Castroneves Test Firestone Tires at IMS Today and Friday

Three Indianapolis 500 winners - Dan Wheldon (2005), Buddy Rice (2004) and Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002) - will be performing tire tests for Firestone at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway today (10/6) and tomorrow (10/7).   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: It’s Levi’s Time

Terre Haute, IN… As it has been with others before him, it has seemed to be, up to now, Levi Jones’ year. He hasn’t really dominated USAC’s Sprint Car Series, but he has done well enough to at least call it a breakout year. He is getting closer and closer to taking the point championship and this weekend at the Terre Haute Action Track he took some big steps in that direction. The affable and talented young man has been on the USAC scene for what seems like a good while, but is still only 23. Each year he has improved and his rides have been better and better. And this year with Scott Benic, he is poised to join an illustrious group of racers as a USAC champ. It’s his time.   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: Hoosier in Paradise

Imagine, if you will, a river just outside your motel room, and it flows and bounces over rocks and boulders. Imagine, then, the sound this makes, the sound that the rain would make on your roof, even though the night sky is clear. Imagine that you step out onto the balcony outside your room and you see something you may not get to see very often, namely stars, along with the occasional flying aircraft, more than likely heading southwest to Atlanta, Georgia. Imagine that you sit on that balcony and gaze up at the stars, the aircraft, and the outline of the surrounding mountains that form the Hickory Nut Gorge. You don’t have to imagine that you are far from your everyday world. The land is different, the traffic is almost non-existent, and many of the locals talk “funny.” But, though you may be far from home, here is yet another place where you do feel at home. You feel welcomed as an old friend by old friends. With all that, you dare not forget that, while one can take the Hoosier race fan away from racing, one cannot take the racing from the Hoosier race fan.   read more »
