Columbus, IN… We all too often dwell on the rainouts that racing fans and teams experience from time to time. This, of course, is true in our so-called real lives too. But we should also dwell on the near misses. You know, those times we dodge the rain that is forecast for the race track and it doesn’t rain.   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: Go, Johnny, Go

By Danny Burton

Terre Haute, IN… Picture, if you will, a race that lasts past midnight. (That shouldn’t be too hard.) And imagine a 100 lap race that has six yellow flags and four red flags, with two of the reds in the first two laps. Try and see in your mind a guy who leads most of the race, loses the lead when he makes a minor bobble, and then regains that lead on a late re-start after one of these caution periods. See this same guy, from out West, who has seldom, if ever, raced here, go on and win the race. Craziest of all, try on this vision: 31 cars in rows of three, charging toward the green flag. The winner was California’s Johnny Rodriguez. The track was Terre Haute’s incomparable Action Track, right by U.S. Road 41. And the race was the Hut 100, brought to you in large part by Clabber Girl. Forget the late hour of completion, the numerous race stoppages and slow periods; all involved were okay, though a few would be a good bit sore for a bit. It wasn’t the greatest race I’ve ever seen, nor even the most exciting. But, with all that, it was short track racing with all the thrills one could ask for on a hot and humid Saturday night in Indiana and you can’t beat that. (Even when you arrive home at 2:10 a.m.)   read more »

The Hoosier Race Report: First Time Winner

By Danny Burton

Most Any Race Track in America… Maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems to me that car counts are down lately, at least in these parts. One can offer most any theory and maybe, in varying degrees, they are all correct. Maybe the proverbial straw is the steadily increasing gas prices that are driving the low buck racers and the low buck fans away from the track. The lower the budget, the bigger percentage of that budget will be used for transportation. As gas prices rise then, more and more people will be affected.   read more »
